Ending Extinction Basics: Module 2

In this second part of the Ending Extinction course, participants will discover the contributing factors to the rates of extinction the Earth is now experiencing; how the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List identifies and monitors the status of threatened and endangered species; the role of state, federal, and international regulations and AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums in protecting biodiversity; conservation strategies and programs that are seeking to end the extinction of today's species; and what the general public and zoo and aquarium visitors and supporters can do. In two video case studies, participants will also learn about the crisis facing giraffes in their natural habitat and what efforts are taking place to save them, and the groundbreaking work that is underway to try to save one of the most critically endangered animals on the planet, the northern white rhino.
