Introducing the Da Vinci Index
In November of 2010, San Diego Zoo Global commissioned an economic impact study to understand the economic potential of biomimicry and bioinspiration. Almost one year later, we are pleased to announce the first economic index measuring ongoing growth in the field. On August 24, 2011, Dr. Lynn Reaser presented her perspective looking forward, as well as the encouraging findings. The index, named after famed inventor and early “biomimicrist” Leonardo Da Vinci, looked back over the past decade at biomimicry-related activity and tracked some exciting growth in just ten short years. Starting in 2000 with a baseline number of 100 the Index measured at 713 by 2010!

Innovation (iHub) Expanded to Include Biomimicry Cluster
On August 5, 2011 the Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) announced the expansion of the San Diego iHub to include the region's emerging biomimicry cluster and a regional expansion to the Cities of Murrieta, Temecula and part of Riverside. To highlight this expansion, San Diego Zoo Global and the City of Murrieta are pleased to host an evening Biomimicry Reception on September 28, 2011, featuring Bruce Coleman, City of Murrieta, and Dr. David Kisailus, UC Riverside. Inspiring Adaptations!
Cheetahs are the fastest land mammals reaching speeds of up to 70 miles per hour. Their bodies are expertly adapted to achieve such high speeds:
- Their claws do not retract, increasing traction at all times
- They have an incredibly flexible spine, allowing them to cover a great distance with each stride.
Cheetahs, known for their speed and fierce predatory nature, have inspired the creation of many items in the field of athletics including prosthetics and sports gear. |
