"Squeally, Squeally Cute" Piglets at the Zoo
Kicking up their heels and investigating everything, three little Chacoan peccary piglets at the Zoo have sent the "cute" level soaring. Born on June 19, the terrifically busy trio is delighting guests with their antics. Chacoan peccary youngsters often play together by leaping around and running in circles, a behavior known as frisky hopping. Keepers say the youngsters run, sprint, and can sometimes be seen jumping and turning in mid-air. Aside from frisky hopping, the youngsters like to spend time wallowing in their dust and mud baths, usually keeping close to their parents, which are very protective of their youngsters. Peccaries use their large snouts to dig and root around, a behavior that the youngsters have been eager to mimic. Come visit—we know you'll be "rooting" for them!
Condor Chick: She's a Big Girl Now!
Time flies when you're a growing condor chick. Cuyamaca, our condor chick featured on this year's Condor Cam, has been identified as a girl, and at more than 100 days of age, she is starting to get her big-bird feathers! Not only are her wing feathers coming in, she is also starting to sport tail feathers. Since an adult California condor's wingspan can reach 9 ½ feet, Cuyamaca has a way to go: right now her wingspan is about 5 feet. But she's on her way!
Brewmaster Dinner at the Park
Raise a glass to summer at the Safari Park tomorrow, July 13, as our Brewmaster Dinner features Sierra Nevada Brewery. Held in Hunte Nairobi Pavilion, the event begins with an animal presentation at 6 p.m., and includes a reception, four-course dinner, beer pairings, and a souvenir beer mug. Guests must be 21 years of age or older. Make your reservation at 619-718-3000.
Summertime Family Fun
Summer is in full swing, and the Zoo and Safari Park have two continents' worth of fun planned! Come early and stay late for the "wildest" experiences in town. This year's Nighttime Zoo, running through September 2, is themed "Koalafornia Dreamin'" and focuses on Aussie-themed animals, music, food, shows, and much more. At the Safari Park's Summer Safari through August 18, you can immerse yourself in a celebration with African flair. Live music, acrobats, activities for the kids, and special presentations will all be part of the adventure. You can even enjoy the Park's newest exhibit, Lemur Walk, with its family of plucky prosimians. Start planning now—there's so much to see and do!
