A Lovely, Leggy Young Lady
Bahati the Masai giraffe gave birth on December 22, and the frisky female calf has been kicking up her heels and delighting guests at the Zoo. Weighing 157 pounds at birth and measuring 6 feet, 1 inch tall, the as-yet-unnamed cutie has already met the rest of the herd in the exhibit in the Zoo’s Urban Jungle zone. This is Bahati’s 10th calf, and the proud papa is herd sire, Silver.
Mary the Elephant Is Nifty Fifty
The matriarch of the Zoo’s elephant herd turned the big 5-0 on January 4, and her keepers made sure this milestone birthday was marked with a party! A giant “50” fashioned from browse adorned the exhibit yard, and she enjoyed a selection of treats placed inside a cardboard “cake.” Here’s to many happy returns for this beautiful pachyderm.
A Fuller Flock at Lorikeet Landing
Things are even more colorful at the Safari Park’s Lorikeet Landing aviary, where 30 new feathered beauties have moved in, bringing the total of winged wonders there to 73! This amazingly immersive experience allows guests to see these cheerful birds and experience the thrill of feeding the lorikeets by hand. Upon entering the aviary, the colorful birds can be seen flying around and landing on guests who have purchased a cup of nectar to feed them. The aviary is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. daily and is located in the Nairobi Village.
Winter Brewmaster Dinner at Albert’s at the Zoo
Albert’s Restaurant at the Zoo is presenting a Winter Brewmaster Dinner featuring Manzanita Brewing Company on Saturday, January 25, beginning with a reception with animal ambassadors at 6 p.m. in the Treetops Banquet Room. Dinner follows at 6:45. Join Brewery Founder Jeff Trevaskis and Head Brewer Matt Patterson to “Taste Our Passion” with a pairing menu designed by Executive Chef Chris Mirguet and Albert’s Chef Charles Boukas. Cost is $69 per person plus tax and gratuity; nonmembers add Zoo admission. Must be at least 21 years of age to attend.
