Coati Cuties in Action

The scene at the Safari Park’s Thorntree Terrace just got a lot cuter—and more active—with the arrival of five South American coati youngsters! Closely related to raccoons, coatis are busy and amazingly agile little animals that use their distinctive ringed tails for balance. Climbing, jumping, digging, and even somersaulting, the curious critters are keeping their caretakers at the Park on their toes. High-tail it on over to the Park and see if you can keep up!

Condormania "Continues"

The young female California condor chick hatched on April 29 has a name, thanks to the "continuing" support of bird lovers everywhere. The winning name, Su'nan, which means "to continue to or keep on" in the Chumash language, garnered 900 votes in the online naming contest. Thousands of followers have kept up with Su'nan, watching her progress from egg to chick. She is being cared for by her protective foster parents, Towich and Sulu, who have really taken the youngster under their wing.

It's Birthday Two for Xiao Liwu

Xiao Liwu, our adorable black-and-white wunderkind, celebrated his second birthday late last month with a 100-pound ice cake. In fitting with the panda party's beach theme, Mr. Wu's exhibit was decorated with cardboard (and highly destructible) beach balls, seahorses, jellyfish, and other fun gifts. Yummy party snacks included slices of apple, yam, carrots, and bamboo, with a drizzling of yam paste "frosting." It was a sweet treat for a sweet bear. Many happy returns!

Explore "Koalafornia" at Nighttime Zoo

Don't let summer end without a visit to "Koalafornia!" The Australian Outback meets the California shore for this year's Nighttime Zoo, running through September 1 at the Zoo. Aussie lore enchants and abounds throughout the evening, especially during the new show "Australiana II, Return to the Outback." The Kangaroo Crossing crew will be on hand (and feet) performing kangaroo-style skills during an exciting trampoline act, and Dr. Zoolittle has a special show full of fun. Summer snacks, an evening happy hour at Albert's Restaurant, and the chance to see our new mountain lion exhibit are all part of the fun, which runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
