Earning Her Stripes
Ranking high in the cute category is the Zoo’s newest okapi calf, a sweet little female born on May 19 to four-time mom Safarani. Weighing 81 pounds, the healthy arrival almost doubled her birth weight in a little over two weeks! When full grown, the as-yet-unnamed okapi will weigh several hundred pounds and stand about five feet tall at the shoulder. You can visit her in her exhibit along Hippo Trail in the Zoo’s Lost Forest. For a quick peek, you can also click below to see a video of her public debut. Stripes look good on her, wouldn’t you say?
Australian Outback Is Open!
Come say g’day to all sorts of animals from the Land Down Under at the Zoo’s Conrad Prebys Australian Outback! From wombats and wallabies to kookaburras and cockatoos, Australian Outback offers the chance to experience several species of marsupials and colorful birds. The crowning glory, the Queenslander House, offers eye-level viewing from its decks of the largest koala colony outside of Australia. It’s a brand-new experience you won’t soon forget!
Family Fun Abounds at “Koalafornia Dreamin’ ” and “Summer Safari”
The Zoo and Safari Park have quite a summer of fun planned! Come early and stay late for the “wildest” experiences in town. This year’s Nighttime Zoo, June 22 through September 2, is themed “Koalafornia Dreamin’ ” and focuses on Aussie-themed animals, music, food, shows, and much more. At the Safari Park’s “Summer Safari presented by LivingSocial,” June 29 through August 18, immerse yourself in a celebration with African flair. Live music, acrobats, activities for the kids, and special presentations will all be part of the adventure. You can even enjoy the Park’s newest exhibit, Lemur Walk, with its family of plucky prosimians. Start planning now—there’s so much to see and do!
