Panda Cub Name Game
What’s in a name? If you’re our new panda cub, that monumental moniker needs to combine cultural significance, meaning—and creativity! It’s no small feat, and that’s why we’ve opened the process up for input from panda fans all over the world. Suggestions must be submitted in Chinese pinyin, the official system to transcribe Chinese characters into Latin script, and the meaning must be included. We’re taking submissions only on the San Diego Zoo Global website page through Monday, September 24, and then the Giant Panda Team will review all submissions and narrow the list. Officials in China will make their approved selections, and you’ll get a chance to vote for your favorite in October. The winning name will then be revealed in mid-November!
Big “Scale” Fun at Reptilemania at the Zoo!
Four days of close encounters of the scaly kind await at Reptilemania presented by Petco, September 27 to 30 at the Zoo. Slither down our brand-new Reptile Walk, check out snakes, lizards, tortoises, and all sorts of other cold-blooded critters, and enter our Instragram contest. There’s more reptilian revelry than you can shake a tail at!

We are featuring fresh sod for our female elephants at the Zoo, as well as a variety of enrichment items for our elephant herd at the Safari Park—including elephant pedicures! We also hope to provide a snow day for our polar bears, Chinook, Tatqiq, and Kalluk, and our brown bears, Blackie, Scout, and Montana. For just $10, you can help us buy snow for the bears!
